Walking in the Dark.

December 9th, 2006

I came into a front side door of my church’s auditorium awhile ago. It was pitch black. I couldn’t really see anything at all, but since I am so familiar with the facility that I was able to easily walk around all the obstacles between me and the back of the room. Let me say that again: because of my familiarity, I could walk around my church while in complete darkness.

Is it possible to become so familiar with our Christianity that we can walk around just fine yet still be in the darkness? I think so.

Satan knows that he can’t stop most of us from going to church or following Christ, and I think he knows it. So instead of blatantly lying to us (we’re expecting that), he tries to trick us by allowing us to do all the right “steps” . . . but keeps us walking in the dark. If he can keep us from actually doing something for Jesus, then the Kingdom of God will not advance any further. If he can get us to put our relationship with Christ on “maintenance mode” instead of us passionately seeking God’s voice, then the Kingdom of God will not advance.

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. (James 1:22). Let’s do it!

Hmm…this is interesting, because I just had this experience this past Wednesday.

I came through the same door, with the lights off, and it occurred to me that I knew the room so well that I could walk to the back very quickly and not collide with anything.

This is an interesting, yet true correlation with our faith. Definitely something to think about…now, excuse me while I go to my thinking chair…

    Wow. Simple, yet so challenging.

What you say is totally true. I sometimes find myself thinking I’m a good guy and doing the stuff I need to do. But then I realize I have fallen into darkness. So I try to remember what Jesus said in Matt 6:22-23. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body sahll be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, the whole body shall be full of darkness…(KJV)

I have walked in that same door (about once a month or so) when it’s black, and I’m good to go as well.

But, i’m always cautious–what is someone left a ladder in the middle of the aisle? what is the maintenance guy was moving chairs?

Sometimes, we get so familiar, we run through the darkness and think we’re invincible. and then, when we least expect it, we learn we’re not invincible, and it hurts–sometimes for days and days (when we have a really large bruise on our left shin).

LOL! Yes, I have walked in that door with the lights off, and run right into something in the middle of the room that’s not normally there!

And, let me just tell you, I bruise easy. :)

Maybe it’s time to put a lightswitch by the door. The more access we have to “light” the less we’ll stumble. Think about it.
