5 Replies to “Accountability”

  1. I don’t know very much about Glenn Packiam? What exactly does he do?

As far as the quote goes, I know that accountability has kept me from some major pitfalls, but I also know that sometimes I find myself relying too much on accountability, when I should be pulling myself up by the bootstraps. I guess balance is where it’s at, at least for me.

  2. Adam,
Accountability is at the heart of Disciple-Making. You can’t Make-Disciples without it; but how far should it go? I was in the center of an extreme effort in Disciple-Making. It is historically referred to as The Shepherding Movement.

The movement was headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, FL but also had a very large movement in Jacksonville, FL. I saw the commune style, heavy-handed accountability the Shepherding Movement is known for. Many of the people who were involved in it were my close friends. I would probably have been more involved if I hadn’t lived onboard ship.

The Shepherding Movement was a sincere attempt to Make-Disciples and to undo the total lack of Disciple-Making in the body of Christ. It went to far, however, and now the church has practically done away with all types of Disciple-Making accountability, all because of this fear of the renowned SHEPHERDING MOVEMENT.

If you would read about the Wesleyan revivals of the 1700s, and the subsequent start of the Methodist Church, you will find that John Wesley used Disciple-Making efforts that were very similar to The Shepherding Movement. Our independent nation, made up of independent people rejects any type of accountable structure. That’s the way it is from the minister behind the pulpit to the person sitting in the “pew.” Disciple-Making means being accountable. We Americans bristle at the thought.

The founders of The Shepherding Movement:
    1. Derek Prince
    2. Bob Mumford
    3. Don Basham
    4. Ern Baxter
    5. Charles Simpson

  3. Glenn Packiam is one of the worship leaders at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, and part of the Desperation Band. His big “things” at the church there are leading worship at their college ministry and heading up the New Life School of Worship.

  4. @adam: Thanks for the background info. As soon as I saw New Life Church, I immediately remembered where I had heard the name! 🙂

I have heard of the Shepherding Movement and it’s ensuing damage to the idea and practice of accountability. Accountability is definitely one of those things we need, but it is also something that, like almost everything else, must be done with a proper balance.

So, how do we find this balance? Furthermore, what does real accountability look like?
