Control Country.

People from Control Country love to be in control. They are control freaks, and they love it! Their vehicle is a bulldozer, and they want to get the job done! These people want appreciation for what they do.

These people want to accomplish something, they strive on finishing assignments and working “up a ladder.” They want to achieve and succeed. They won’t get offended if you tell them they are controlling a lot — they love being control freaks! Their attitude is “get ‘er done.” People from Control Country want to achieve so much that they will press forward and if their pressing causes problems — they’ll just clean it up later. These people get it done!

If you want to discourage these people – don’t let them ever take a “front seat” of leadership. Never give them the remote control, never let them choose which restaurant to go to, never allow them to lead you or a group. Afterall, that would be encouraging their control-ness. If you want to discourage them — don’t encourage what they love!

  1. OK, I’m trying to get my head around this one…maybe I’m too stuck on the idea of Hippocrates four basic personality types, i.e. melancholic, sanguine, choleric and phlegmatic, but I can’t think of how this fits into one of those categories healthily.

When I think of a control freak, I think of someone who tears down everyone around them so that they can remain on top. (I worked for a man like this once, and it was the absolute worst time I’ve ever had in my life. I actually had to leave the job, and so did several others, because we began to experience emotional abuse, and it bordered on physical abuse!)

I’ve seen the tendencies of controlling in several people I know, outside of the job I mentioned, and it usually involves a degree of manipulation, and ultimately stepping on the people on the lower rung of the “ladder”, and in the process destroying or demoralizing the smaller person.

Maybe I’m missing the point because I’m applying my experience derived connotation to the word control, but I would love to have a little better understanding of what you are saying about control, so any feedback would just rock!

I guess I don’t see control as a good thing, or a Christ-like thing (didn’t He tell us that those who would be great in His Kingdom would the the servants?), ever, but that may be my definition. I guess I’m also asking how this might fit into my world view as a follower of Christ.

  2. Any of the personality types can be bad — but they all could be good as well. Your greatest strengths are your greatest weaknesses as well!

The Apostle Paul most certainly had some “Control” in him. He GOT IT DONE, and kept going. I think of the disagreement Paul and Barnabas had about John Mark (Acts 15:39) — that situation has “Control Country” written all over it — but God still worked mightily.

The Phrase, “Get it done!” best describes this person. They are the “Go Get It Done” people. They can accomplish a lot, but the potential pitfall is exactly what joe said — they can have a tendency to step on other people in order to do it. The greatest strength is the greatest weakness.

If you can’t wrap your head around this, don’t feel bad – I have a very hard time wrapping my head around the “Nationalities” that I’m not from as well. Everybody is that way — that’s the exact reason I’m blogging about them.

  3. Actually, comparing the control country to Paul has really cleared things up!

It gives me a better point of reference to understand the personality you are talking about.

Frankly, I still don’t understand the personality, it’s definitely not me, but the point of reference helps me see the positive side, rather than just the negative.

    Thanks!
