Godly Counsel.
Hearing God’s Voice

Another way God speaks to us is through Godly counsel. A great Bible example is in 1 Samuel when God called Samuel. Samuel was a boy who lived with Eli, a priest. Samuel heard someone calling him three times in the middle of the night, and he thought it was Eli. After the third time, Eli told Samuel that if he heard someone calling his name again, he should respond, “Yes, God. I’m listening!” Samuel did just that and then God spoke to him (through divine revelation). The point here is that God first spoke to Samuel through Eli.

Let’s start listening for God’s voice in the words of others.

  1. I think it’s interesting that God was trying to speak to Samuel…He tried several times. But Samuel just wasn’t getting it. So God had to bring a second person into the mix.

I think it’s also interesting that there’s no record of God telling Eli what to say to Samuel. God spoke to Samuel through Eli’s wisdom.

  2. Or maybe it would be better to say that God used Eli’s wisdom to help Samuel realize that God was trying to speak.

  3. I’d hate to think of the place I’d be (except for the fact that it’d probably be Indiana!) if I hadn’t gotten the amazing counsel I did from your mom and my sister. But regardless of the counsel we receive from Eli, Anita, or anyone else…it is always our decision what we’re going to do with it.

*sigh* He knows what He’s doing…
